Background
Malcolm Harbour and other MEPs across the political spectrum of the European Parliament formalised the European Forum for Manufacturing (EFM) by signing the Brussels Statutes in Spring 2009. These give the EFM legal status as a non-profit foundation offering a non partisan, cross party and pan-European discussion forum. It provides a platform for the exchange of information and the identification of key issues for manufacturing. The Forum does not itself take positions on specific issues.
The Forum has already brought together MEPs from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom with representatives of many manufacturing companies. European Commissioners, Directors General, their officials, the Council Presidency and Member State Representations, as well as trade unions where appropriate, are also invited to contribute to EFM meetings.
Previous meetings of the EFM provided manufacturing companies with the opportunity to exchange views with MEPs from all the main political groups on the specific impact of legislation currently under discussion. These have included employment policy, environmental and climate change issues, research, innovation and development, public private partnerships, internal market and trade policy.
The European Forum for Manufacturing has three types of membership: Members of the European Parliament, manufacturing industry and related trade associations / employer organisations. It is financed by an annual company contribution together with sponsorship of Roundtable meetings.
Companies which have participated in EFM meetings include ABB, Alcoa, Airbus, Air Liquide, Alstom, Bayer, BMW, Bosch, Caterpillar, Corus, Daimler, GKN, Hitachi, IBM, Peugeot, Philips, Renault, Rolls Royce, Scania, Siemens, Toyota, Umicore and Volvo.
“Manufacturing has a vital role in securing Europe’s prosperity … Politicians don’t create jobs. But we can create the right framework for industry to thrive.”
